Raymond Wright

Rollerman

By Peter Cottis

I have obtained two CDs from the Essex Sound and Video Archives (ESVA) which themselves are apparently exact copies of two cassettes that were recorded by a professional interviewer of the life and times of Raymond Wright.

Raymond was a rollerman at Rankin's Flower Mill in Stambridge for much of his working life. He also saw war service in North Africa, Italy and Greece.

The interview is structured but has not been edited to remove silences etc. Also the tapes are allowed to run out at the end of each side and the interview is then taken up again by the interviewer when the tapes are turned over.

I have copied the etiquettes on the back of the CD jackets and these are displayed as the recordings are played. This gives the listener a chronology of the subjects covered in each recording, without however a time track that would allow pinpointing of a particular subject.

Permission has been obtained from ESVA to make the recordings public.

First interview with Raymond Wright (born 18/11/1921) of Rochford, in particular of his work at Stambridge Mills. Interviewed by M. Roberts, 15/03/1996.
