As we are at the 100th Anniversary of the end of WW1 I thought I would pay tribute to one of Rankin's Cricket Club's (CC's) brave men who fought for our country.

This is a picture of the 28 year old Leonard Padfield in 1908 who was born in Easington, County Durham in 1880.

He played for Rochford CC (now Rankins CC) from 1900 until 1913. He was the son of the Rector of Hawkwell Church, George Padfield.

Ten years after the photo was taken and towards the end of WWI and at the age of 38, he was serving as a Lieutenant and Acting Major in the Tank Corps.

He won the Military Cross (MC) for bravery with the citation reading:

"During operations near Joncourt on 1st September 1918 this officer commanded a composite company of tanks with great skill. Although under heavy artillery and machine gun fire, he led the tanks on foot and directed them to their objectives. It was in great measure due to his courage that they secured their final objectives."
