A walk about Paglesham Churchend in Mono

Pictures from July 1989

By Robert Hallmann

I used to travel all over Essex taking pictures and writing for Essex Countryside, later Essex Life, but there was a time when I caught the bug and went back to mono pictures, some of which resulted in an Essex Libraries traveling Exhibition. Now I'm re-discovering the negatives – at least I marked the dates. At Churchend Creek someone told me "My father-in-law spent the war years at the end of the creek waiting for U-boats." The picture that conjures up, should it have happened? I found the pillbox and to my surprise a small plane came in and landed nearby. I understand the farmer there would go shopping in Southend by plane. Does anybody know the story?
