Love Lane Fete, 17th July 2011

It will be 50 years in July since the swimming pool in Spring Gardens was officially opened by Miss Ann Long (now Mrs Pearce).

On the 17th July, Love Lane school will be celebrating this event with an exhibiton in the school in the morning ("Rayleigh Through the Looking Glass") & then a fete in the afternoon.

If you have any anecdotes or memories of the opening or the construction of the pool & pavilion we would love to hear from you. There will be a box in Rayleigh library or write to Love Lane School, Love Lane, Rayleigh SS6 7DD or email: office@rayleigh.sch.uk

In the morning, you will also be able to look round the school and see all the changes that have taken place in the last 50 or more years.

I was at Love Lane School form September 1957 to July 1963 and attended the opening of the new swimming pool. I remember it was quite a walk from the school to the site and we were taken in class groups by our teachers. I also remember the antics of Ernie Lane, although I didn't know who he was at the time. I learnt to swim in that pool and I remember my first lesson with a polystyrene float which was rounded at one end!
