Sunnyside, Derek Hurrell's home
By Nathan Bell
This is a brief response to Patricia Rudorfer's article about Canewdon View Road.
Derek Hurrell is one of my neighbours and lived in Sunnyside after Patricia’s family moved to Rayleigh. Derek has stories about being the paper boy, cycling out in the countryside delivering papers to Fambridge and towards Hullbridge for the local newsagents Wyeth’s. He became an Army Cadet when old enough and is in the group photo of the Essex Regiment, in this archive. He used to park an army lorry on the empty ground opposite Sunnyside. Later he was a fireman in Rochford and now lives in Doric Avenue.
I remember Canewden View Road from the 1950s when there were small trees & bushes growing alongside the path. And there was some sort of oval track, in the empty ground, that was well overgrown but was a cycle track for the Ashingdon Adders, so I was told. We used to play up & down the drive to Newton Hall the ground now occupied by Newton Hall Gardens, behind Wyeth’s newsagent’s shop. The attached view of Canewden View Road and the Ashingdon Road from Canewden View Road will, I hope, will be of interest to Patricia.
